this isn’t the first red onion from our garden – we picked some that were only the size of green onions, just to see what they looked and tasted like. this one we ate with lox and a tomato from the garden. the tomato was the first, i think. the skin was tender and it was sweet even though it was still reddish-orange. i think we also tried to eat the green stem that blossomed – it was terrible and hard as a rock. how was i supposed to know i should’ve cut it off when it was lower and softer and before it actually became a bloom.
