i’m in the middle of reading the omnivore’s dilemma by michael pollan. i’m also eating a costco hot dog. at this very moment. i opted for the lemonade as i’m trying to avoid HFCS (i just bought a mexican coke at albertson’s, too) but it turns out every fountain option at costco has HFCS as the second ingredient. i really should have known better. damn corn industry…

cantaloupe-basil agua fresca
in addition to making chicken salad for my honey, i also made her cantaloupe agua fresca! after consuming, she says she would prefer mint instead of basil and lime instead of lemon. i had no idea that agua fresca, at least this one, could be this sweet without adding sugar.
Ingredients
15 cups chopped cantaloupe (about two 3 1/2-pound melons)
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves
Preparation
Working in batches, purée cantaloupe in a blender until smooth.
Set a fine-mesh sieve over a large bowl; line sieve with cheesecloth. Strain purée into bowl; gather cheesecloth into a bundle and squeeze any remaining juice into bowl. Repeat process with fresh cheesecloth, straining into a large pitcher (you should have about 5 cups juice).
Add lemon juice, basil, and 2 cups cold water to pitcher. Let steep at room temperature for 1–2 hours. Fill glasses with ice. Divide agua fresca among glasses.
8 servings
chicken salad
4 (6- to 8-ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts , no more than 1 inch thick, trimmed
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 celery ribs, minced
1 shallot, minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1 tablespoon minced fresh tarragon
1. Dissolve 2 tablespoons salt in 6 cups cold water in Dutch oven. Submerge chicken in water. Heat pot over medium heat until water registers 170 degrees. Turn off heat, cover pot, and let stand until chicken registers 165 degrees, 15 to 17 minutes.
2. Transfer chicken to paper towel–lined tray. Refrigerate until chicken is cool, about 30 minutes. While chicken cools, whisk mayonnaise, lemon juice, mustard, and ¼ teaspoon pepper together in large bowl.
3. Pat chicken dry with paper towels and cut into ½-inch pieces. Transfer chicken to bowl with mayonnaise mixture. Add celery, shallot, parsley, and tarragon; toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve. (Salad can be refrigerated for up to 2 days.)
N.B., i usually use one package of costco chicken breasts and therefore add a little extra bit of some celery and tarragon to match the larger amount of protein. m likes extra tarragon, so instead of 1.5 tsp (halving the recipe), i use 2-2.5. i also use 2 celery ribs as long as they’re not too big. don’t overdo the parsley, because it makes the salad too earthy (personal experience).

busted!
when i arrived at the west LA farmers’ market, my waffle/fry guy was still getting ready (40 minutes until liftoff!) and my tamale lady was busted by the health dept for tamales not hilled enough prior to serving. at least she was honest. so it’s a loca pupusa for me and waffles and fries in a short while.
after my pupusa, i tried to get waffles and fries but the fries were gonna be another 30 minutes and it turns out that my waffle was underdone. so much for getting to the market early for best selection. i can’t really fault the waffle guy…he has a new employee.

when i got home, i decided to bike to WF for the basil, tarragon, and cantaloupe i couldn’t find at the farmers market. it was a good excuse to use the new bike lane SM installed on california going east. turns out, the lane is only eastbound as the westbound direction is merely a “bike route.” weird, given that the ocean is westbound and more likely to be used by bicycles.
the round trip only took me 1.28 miles / 7.58 minutes @ an avg spd of 9.7 mph
the highlight of the day was realizing a bird pooped on my arm. i’m supposed to feel lucky, but all i could think was: “this is why people drive.”
made me chuckle
j: “i don’t talk to anyone all day so by the time i see you it’s like verbal diarrhea.”
m: “i like it. i’ll be your commode.”
ambitious
biked to hermosa beach today. this is of note because i’ve never traveled any farther south than the manhattan beach pier. for a saturday morning, the path wasn’t as crowded as expected, but there were plenty of dogs on leashes creating potential havoc and confusion. hermosa beach around the pier is wide open and quaint (unlike venice) with plenty of outdoor cafes and room to stretch and people watch. there’s even a park close by the pier. i took a moment for myself and noshed on my apple and thought about my next trip down here when i will bike to redondo beach and, hopefully someday, to palos verdes peninsula.
outbound: 10.46 miles from ballona creek path start to hermosa beach pier / approx 45 mins / approx 13 mph avg spd
return: 10.19 miles / 45.11 mins / 13.4 mph avg spd
n.b., i parked the car at a new spot today to save myself 0.5 miles because i knew i was pushing my distance limit. (i’m just not as young as i used to be.) i didn’t like this spot as well, but was grateful for that extra 0.5 mile i saved as i was totally pooped. looks like i’ll need to work up to that redondo beach excursion.
home again home again

today was the most beautiful day. sunny. warm. not too warm. light breeze. i biked and took a walk today. just couldn’t resist…
chobani taste test revisited again
today is the last of our taste tests. we paired the apple cinnamon 0% with the lemon 0%. the apple is fruit on the bottom; the lemon is not. the lemon has little rind bits throughout. turns out, i was wrong: the 0% makes any flavor taste like farmer’s cheese. and the 0% has a funny texture. of course it does, anything with even a modicum of fat is going to taste better. any foodie will tell you that. would i buy either of these again? yes, probably. but i’ll seek out a gross (noun; a group of 12 dozen, or 144) of passionfruit first.
denial
m: “i don’t think i work that much…”
j: “yes, well, denial is 99% of everything.”
chobani taste test revisited
we put 2% strawberry-banana up against 2% mango this morning. interestingly, m hated the mango and i hated the strawberry-banana. everyone won! admittedly, i didn’t like the mango chunks as well as i liked the apple chunks. apple 0% and lemon 0% are the only ones left in the fridge. oh, and there are a few more passionfruit left, too.
