verbs

Have you noticed how people now use facebook as a verb just like people use google as a verb?

starbucks wi-fi

As a long-time at+t dsl customer, I used to be able to use starbucks (*$) as a wi-fi hotspot. But when I dropped my dsl service, my hotspot got dropped, too. The best I could do was an hour if I used my *$ card. But now…finally(!)…I can get more than an hour of wi-fi. In fact, I’m using 3 hours and running. Maybe it’s a fluke or only this *$, but I’m not complaining. Not today, anyway.

farmers choice

My Farmers Choice

Eating cherries now. Ate lychee this morning. Ate blueberries before that. Had pear and tangerines yesterday. Gonna make soup from lotsa veggies tonight. I’m pretty impressed. Not *everything* is local, but taste, quality, and prices are better than TJ’s Vons and WF. Now I kinda wish I lived @ pico and 34th…

oatmeal rocks

No, it’s not quaker. No, it’s not steel cut. It’s stone ground oats. And there are tiny rocks in my oatmeal. Sandy, gravely, gritty rocks. Oatmeal rocks! It’s like a mixture of steel cut oats (thick and creamy) and cream of wheat (tiny grains) but tastier. What else are we doing today? We are making mushroom soup, baking bread, and going to RGG+SGG’s house.

chilly

Ooooohhhh…it’s chilly today. Like winter…I love it! It’s one of those days where my hands get cold in the shade and I need a hat but then I shed the fleece jacket in the sun.

learning to bike (again)

I drove to dockweiler beach today for many reasons: to try out biking on the path, to see where I could park close to the path, to avoid throngs of people and to see how far away the water treatment facility is from manhattan beach (3 miles exactly). I overpaid ($8) for parking by parking in the lot immediately north of the hang gliding school and the treatment plant. I could’ve parked in the official dockweiler lot but it seemed closed (it wasn’t. I shouldn’t be so put off by traffic cones) or I could’ve parked for free along vista del mar but wasn’t sure if I’d have to climb stairs to return to the car (I wouldn’t have). It was more a reconaissance trip than a recreational trip. I didn’t avoid the people. In fact, from the plant all the way to manhattan beach there were lots of families biking, people walking, dogs walking, and plenty of riders w/o helmets (and quite a few w/ ipods). The random patches of sand, the weaving and wobbling amateur bikers, and my own inexperience made me feel like I was learning how to bike all over again. But 50 minutes and ____ miles later I had completed a successful trip.

funnel mill

Continuing my quest for good work/study places. Today I landed at Funnel Mill on Broadway between 9th + 10th. Great atmosphere. Free wifi. Siphon coffee. They also offer kopi but at $80/cup, I passed. I can buy it for much cheaper. Coffee is expensive ($4.05/cup) but comes in glass mug w/ cute little sugar serving ware and a cream demitasse. Perhaps that is the price you pay for siphon coffee. Unfortunaetly, no food, but I would definitely return.

border grill #15

I had been looking forward to border grill and, more importantly, “gourmet” mexican…perhaps this was the problem. Or maybe it was the rain. Or my midday nap. Or too much kim chi. In any case, dinner was a disappointment. The tres leches and (more complex) chocolate cream pie were the highlights of the meal. The ceviche had mayo in it (seriously?). The panuchos were the second best thing. The chile relleno + cochinita pibil were meh – nothing overly special. And although I love the green sauce, it was present in almost every dish. Mi Ranchito has way more interesting food. Perhaps if I had been in the mood for just this, it would have been better – expectations are a b***h.
