hygge

from dwell magazine: hygge (pronounced hoog-eh) is a danish word with no direct english translation. it describes that warm, cozy feeling that develops when friends gather in a room with some open flames, alcohol, and plenty of time to enjoy the experience.

mind you, it’s not a party and it’s not something that happens on the beach.

and now that i reread the definition, i feel i must clarify that it is also not a rave or a pyro party for arsonists.

now i just have to get me a house, some open flames, and time to enjoy both.

i’m reading meggs’ history of graphic design and am quite enjoying the primer. today, i came across this passage: “Even as a boy in Bloomington, Illinois, Frederic Goudy had a passionate love of letterforms. He later recalled cutting over three thousand letters from colored paper and turning the walls of the church he attended into a multicolored environment of Biblical passages.” awesome.

bookmark: siff

saw this on minimalistdesign.org under the “ads” section: brazil flag. and others. you’ll just have to go check it out for yourself to see the other ones. not every flag is on the site, so i went to the siff site and found this and this. i love it because it’s food photography and brilliant design.

(in case either of these web sites go away, here’s the brazil flag again as a screenshot:

design project

From One Kings Lane: “Using a cameraless approach, [Amanda] Means places objects inside her large, horizontal enlarger. Light passes directly through the objects to expose the photographic paper creating her dramatic, spectral black and white tableaux of leaves and glasses.” (photos below were screenshotted from onekingslane.com.)

when i first saw this, i thought: “this is what you can do with a softbox and a black background. i have a softbox and a black background. maybe i can achieve the same effect.”
