what’s this called?

“What’s this called?” j inquired, pointing to the small well above m’s upper lip but below her nose.
“The philtrum, or the velum. I think it’s the velum,” m replied. Then a tiny smirk crept across her face. She looked at j. “You have a Netter. Look it up.”
[it gets better. friendly banter continues as we debate whether or not i can recap this conversation on our blog because of the Netter reference.]
m responds by listing off all the different occupations that use a Netter: anatomy illustrator, physical therapist, nurse, nurse anesthetist…(slight pause)…serial killer. Again a smirk. j bursts out giggling.

after m leaves for work, j finds Netter who says it’s the philtrum – plate 45.

fiction

m expects me to write TGLN (the great lesbian novel) in the next two years. if i do that, she’ll find a way to get it published. and then maybe both of us can quit our jobs (if only it worked like that). i have been thinking about writing more and more. i once pooh-poohed having a blog because i thought i would have nothing to write about, but it seems i’m wrong on that count. so anything is possible. and if i put the idea out here in the blogosphere, maybe i’ll take the idea more seriously.

somewhat related, dogsitter (also known as KL) has always wanted me to write a novel because he hopes i’ll mention him in it.

celebration

yesterday, feeling quite proud of myself, i went online and bought something for m and then i called a restaurant in santa monica and, upon discovering they are closed on mondays, quickly proceeded to opentable on my blackberry to book a dinner for saturday june 26 – our anniversary.

except our anniversary is not until july 27.

m finds this series of events quite hilarious. and not wholly unexpected.

(truthfully, it’s not the date confusion that she expected – that part is actually quite surprising. it’s the fact that i actually bought something for her and made a dinner reservation.)

summer melancholy

i went out tonight at 8.45pm and found the sky still lit with that warm shade of blue that eventually gives way to dark purple twilight. very soon, immediately after the summer equinox, the days will get shorter and shorter. it’s a cruel trick that mother nature plays on us because for some, school has just been let out and summer has barely begun.

fava beans

(aka “boop” – spelled bób)

m proposed that we make one recipe from one of our many fabulous cookbooks once a week. she says we don’t eat enough good food. by “good” she means gourmet. our first recipe comes from paula wolfert’s mediterranean grains and greens (m is going through a mediterranean cuisine phase). i burned the casserole but we still managed to rescue the dish. unfortunately, the nuances of the spices, harissa, and cumin/coriander got lost in translation. next time…

2.5 TBSP olive oil
2 lbs shoulder lamb chops, trimmed of fat and cut into 3/4″ pieces
1 medium onion
1 1/2 TBSP tomato paste
1 TBSP harissa
2 cloves garlic, peeled, crushed
pinch of ground curry spices (cumin, coriander)
salt and pepper
3 lbs fresh unshelled fava beans (or about 3 cups shelled)
2 bunches swiss chard, washed and stemmed
1 cup chopped flat leaf parsley
chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

  • In a 4-qt heavy casserole, combine the oil, lamb, and onion, and cook over medium heat, stirring often, until meat turns light brown, about 8 minutes. Add the tomato paste and harissa and stir until they glisten and coat the meat, about 2 minutes. Add the garlic, curry spices, salt, and pepper and 3/4 cup water, cover, and cook over medium-low heat for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Meanwhile, shuck the beans and discard the pods. Peel the favas by dropping into boiling water and cooking for half a minute, then drain. Rinse under cool running water and peel off the skins. Cover with plastic wrap and hold up to one hour.
  • Cut the swiss chard as thinly as possible, then cut into 1-inch lengths.
  • Add the swiss chard to the casserole and continue cooking 20 minutes. Stir in the favas and parsley and cook 10 minutes longer. Correct the seasoning with salt and pepper and present decorated with cilantro leaves. Serve at once.

“that depends…”

m retorts: “that’s underwear.”

it’s true. depends are underwear. and i was (am?) an english major. so i should be able to come up with a more sophisticated way of answering questions, right? but i’m prone to rambling and over-analyzing and failing to commit so my first instinct is to waffle and say “that depends.” this journey is far from over…

gr8 day 2 bike

went from home along california to the ocean > north to san vicente > east to 26th > back to ocean > u-turned east again > home. total = 8.57 miles / 41m29s / av spd 12.3. i realized it was uphill eastward and downhill westward when i could only go 12mph going east and 20mph going west (and there was a headwind). also, note to self, there’s a lot of free parking along ocean ave north of montana and along the rezzie streets just east of ocean ave. you know, just in case you want to take a blanket, a book, and the dog and lay outside along the ocean someday.

maps

when i moved to la in 2004, one of the first things i did after returning the moving van was buy an NFT guide and a thomas guide. google maps was just starting to overtake mapquest. i still thought AAA maps were cool (well, they still are). and i hadn’t even considered buying a smartphone or a phone with more than 12 buttons on it.

but now i have a garmin and a blackberry and i will probably get the iphone. do the nft and thomas guide still have a place in my automobile? probably not, despite the fact that thomas guide claims that it is more accurate than internet directions.

funnily enough, i had a mapquest printout of the route from WH to huntington beach that i threw out today. and i briefly considered tossing my 2004 thomas guide, but kept it for nostalgic reasons. you never know when you might want to know exactly where los angeles county stops and orange county starts…

starbucks wi-fi

As a long-time at+t dsl customer, I used to be able to use starbucks (*$) as a wi-fi hotspot. But when I dropped my dsl service, my hotspot got dropped, too. The best I could do was an hour if I used my *$ card. But now…finally(!)…I can get more than an hour of wi-fi. In fact, I’m using 3 hours and running. Maybe it’s a fluke or only this *$, but I’m not complaining. Not today, anyway.

twitter

i still don’t really understand twitter. a whole bunch of comments taken out of context. i don’t understand the @ syntax. i don’t understand how to follow someone or find the relevant history to various tweets. i find texting much more satisfying to follow. and easier. (am i already showing my age? is this how my parents feel?) i find twitter a schizophrenic and multiple personality mess. even with ms. hische’s help, i have trouble. and i’m a freaking web designer…

good thing she has a mom who needs help with twitter, too.
